A quick homemade cookie classic, Pillsbury Sugar Cookies come in a rolling pin shaped package and can be found in the refrigerated section of most local grocery stores and as I stared at bright blue package and promotional “Bake Off” contest I began imagining the sprinkles, candies and frosting that could adorn the top of the cookies. I quickly realized, however, that no extra sugar would be necessary.
According to the packaging, the uncooked dough is not to be eaten. Ha. Who are they kidding?! The dough is a bit gritty because of the sugar and is very sweet to eat raw, but a bit much at times. There is no question that baking these brought me back to a time when women in my family actually had the time and skill to bake from scratch so I happily followed the simple instructions to a T and 10 minutes after baking the Pillsbury Sugar cookies had nearly doubled in size and were golden around the edges.
When I first removed them from the oven, they were slightly puffed up, but after the required cooling period they settled into a flatter version. The sugar crystals are evident and glisten among the cooked dough and the grittiness from the uncooked dough is completely gone. With my first bite it was clear that they are true to their name. As a result eating several homemade Pillsbury Sugar Cookies at once might be difficult and you will certainly need a glass of cold milk to wash down the cups of sugar that is found in one cookie. In fact, the idea of adding even more with frosting or other add-ons would definitely be overkill and could render the cookie inedible. In terms of texture the inside remains slightly soft while the edges are crisp, giving it a homemade feel.
During the holidays, I get inspired to me more domestic for some reason and homemade goodies around the house seem more appropriate as cold weather is approaching. I’m more of a semi-homemade kind of girl and so as to stay true to myself, premade cookie dough or cookie mixes are more my speed. You could buy a box of Entenmann’s Chocolate Chip Cookies, arrange them on a plate and serve them as your own, but at least with this method, you can smell the fruits of your labor. Overall, its hard to go wrong with Pillsbury Sugar Cookies but they don’t really stand out in any particular area.

Well these little delights certainly sound simple enough to make. What really intrigued me was the description after the first bite – that the edges were crispy and the center slightly soft AND the sugary taste. I will definitely be picking up a package of Pillsbury Sugar Cookies!
