Utz Natural Kettle Cooked Sea Salt and Vinegar Chips are another variety of their “healthier” and more premium style chips. We’ve tried a few other varieties of their natural chips (see Utz Gourmet Medley and Utz Natural Lightly Salted), with mixed results and I was hoping that these would manage to balance the crunchy, starchy Kettle Cooked flavor with salt and not-overpowering Vinegar.
Like most Salt and Vinegar chips you could immediately smell the vinegar before the bag was fully opened. Cooked in 100% sunflower oil they are unbelievably salty and greasy and you will probably need a whole paper towel roll if you have any intention of finishing the larger bag like the one we had. In general Sea Salt and Vinegar chips tend to feel more greasy because of the vinegar flavor and oil for cooking combo, but these were especially so.
The chips were crunchy and the bag felt like it had a good amount of chips for the size/price, but the overpowering flavor (which wasn’t bad btw), just seemed to ruin the experience. I’d say its rare for us to want chips to be LESS flavorful but these felt like they needed to be shaken in a paper towel like you would with regular chips.
Unfortunately the overpowering taste of Utz Natural Kettle Cooked Sea Salt and Vinegar chips, combined with the fact that our hands were covered in grease not only made it hard to write this post without ruining my keyboard, it also made them hard to grade. As a snack that is supposed to feel healthier, these chips don’t make you feel as if you being healthier.
If you really like salt and vinegar chips you may want to up these to worth a munch status just to see how they taste, but otherwise they are pretty average. Utz definitely does well making kettle cooked chips that are crunchy and tasty but the flavoring wasn’t a strong suit for this particular chip.
