Another smaller, more local chip company, Herr’s are similar to Utz chips, an old school brand that you can find mostly on the Eastern side of the US. Herr’s Barbecue Potato Chips come in a simple bag that features some tomatoes, sauce and onion and a satisfaction guarantee on the top. So did these Pennsylvania produced chips satisfy?
Compared to Lay’s Chips, Herr’s are actually an even smaller chip. They are almost perfectly circular and very thin. In fact, the on bag display of these chips, like that of Dipsy Doodles, is pretty spot on. As you can imagine this gives them a bit less of a crunch, however, the bag felt really full, which for a cheapie chip is definitely a plus.
We cracked open our bag of Herr’s Barbecue chips expecting a strong smell and were surprised to find almost no odor at all aside from the standard potato/starch smell you usually get when you open a bag of chips. In fact, initially we were a bit worried they were stale (full disclosure: we often try many chips at once bought over a period of time, however we never post a review of chips deemed stale).
Once we had our first Barbecue Herrs Chip, however, we were delighted to find that not only were these chips fresh, we were immediately welcomed with a tangy, flavorful, tasty chip. Each chip was covered with salt and seasoning and you will most definitely need a napkin when you eat them because of the amount of residue left on your hand. The potato chips get their nice red color from the paprika which is also mild in taste
We initially tasted the salt and which was immediately followed by a mild smoky flavor. In fact, “smoky flavor” is listed as an ingredient on the back and it was much better than the Dirty Potato Chips Smoky flavor. Finally your tastebuds enjoy a garlic and onion combo with a sweet finish. Overall it is quite an enjoyable combination of flavors.
We were also happy to find that the taste of Herr’s Barbecue potato chips did not quickly disappear and we recommened eating a few at a time together, which is easy because they are so small, because the pleasant taste is amplified. Overall these are a highly recommended chip. They just miss a must munch status because we find them a bit thin for our liking but if you are looking for a BBQ chip alternative to Lay’s BBQ, these are well worth a try. They would go very nicely with a sandwich because the flavor complements others well without being overly powerful. A PA chip that delivers, Herr’s have officially been added to our personal list of favorite cheapie chips.

Good review. Haven’t tried Herr’s Barbecue Potato Chips yet but I will soon.
