Haldiram’s Yellow Banana Chips brought me back to my younger days, when a heavenly lunch consisted of a Turkey Sub and a side of plantain chips from my local deli. Delivered by a friend who had been in India, I was interested to see if there was any real difference between these and the plantains of my youth.

After trying more unique Indian snacks like Kurkure Naughty Tomato and Desi Beats Flirty Lime, I was actually looking forward to a milder chip that could work on its own or as a side. Even the bag of Haldiram’s Yellow Banana chips was much simpler, featuring a smiling Banana and a picture of what the chips look like (hint: bananas!).

As expected, the ingredients were also simple, banana, oil and salt. When we opened the bag there wasn’t much of an odor to them and you could feel the oil and salt on your hands when grabbing a few. As far as the taste, these banana chips were pretty plain. They tasted starchy and salty (again, no big surprise here) and thankfully didn’t leave too much residue on our fingers.

The majority of the banana chips inside were still well formed and we didn’t really have many crumbs to deal with. Though they had good shape, I felt that Haldirams Banana Chips were cut pretty thin, especially relative to some of the other snacks we try here on a daily basis, and that also led to them having a lack of taste.

This snack definitely brought me back in some ways, but they were saltier, thinner and a bit less greasy then the delicious plantains I remembered. On their own I’m not sure I would recommend them, especially if you buy them in India where there are such a bevy of interesting options. If you prefer something safe or are looking for a milder side, these would be your safest bet.

Filipinos know how to make banana chips. I don’t know about Indian people.
