I’ll buy just about anything with the word “Doritos” on it, so when I saw Doritos Nacho Cheese on Golden Toast Crackers I had to pick them up out of respect for the brand alone. Intrigued, I thought they would be a perfect lunch snack (like a tangy, stickless Handi Snack) because instead of being cheese smothered chips, they were cheese filled crackers, unfortunately the filling was a bit lacking.
The package of Doritos Nacho Cheese on Golden Toast Crackers contains six crackers with a dollop of the signature orange-colored cheese in the middle of each. Once opened, I could tell even before eating that I would want more cheese than offered, as it was centered in the middle of the cracker and barely meeting the edge.
As soon as I took a bite, I knew I had been right. The cracker and cheese, individually, are pretty run-of-the-mill. The cracker is light and buttery, similar to a Keebler Club Cracker, but let’s be real, I didn’t buy the snack for a mediocre cracker. I bought it for the Doritos cheese. Sadly, the cheese was similar in color, but not in taste to the chips.
The cheese itself was a bit gritty, as powdered snack cheese can be (The ingredients contain a curious, “2% less than the following ingredients” which includes cheese and milk). Instead of the slightly spicy taste followed by a burst of cheese you get with Doritos Nacho Cheese Tortilla Chips, it was only a bit of spice followed by blandness – a mouthful of cracker.
Despite the ease of eating, slightly spicy cheese, and buttery, crisp cracker, Doritos Nacho Cheese on Golden Toast Crackers left me disappointed and wishing I had bought the real thing. I’d say the only upside to this snack over the original is that your hands will stay their original color. Stick with the chips!
