Like all of their cousins, Dirty Potato Chips Smoky Chipotle come in a bag that, aside from the name of the snack, doesn’t give much of an indication of what to expect. Instead of the violet/purple bag these came in with a simple look and standard tons of text, it should have shown a picture of a chimney… and lots of fire.
When we cracked open the bag of Smoky Chipotle Dirty Chips we could instantly smell the smokyness of the chips. In terms of the chips themselves, they were the same crunchy, thick chips we loved in the “plain” sea salt variety. You could see some of the potato skins around the edges as well. To be honest, with such a strong smell we were surprised they weren’t covered in black soot!
So what about the taste you ask? Our noses didn’t completely deceive us and as you bite down on these you have a distinct smoky flavor. Where we decieved, however, was the vinegary taste that welcomes and mostly teases you before you realize that where there’s smoke there is FIRE. The chipotle flavor hits you pretty quickly and pretty much takes over any other flavors and refuses to dissipate. We would reach for another chip hoping for a respite but they were all just as hot.
The best way I could describe Dirty Potato Chips Smoky Chipotle for those who don’t have the pleasure of trying them is to think of a very mild salt and vinegar chip that instead of leaving your face puckered, brings with it a very spicy follow up. Your mouth doesn’t burn uncomfortably, but we didn’t find them particularly pleasant.
Featuring the great base of all the other Dirty Potato chips, the flavor, extreme heat + smoke left us no choice but to put them in our unique category. Dirty Chips themselves have so many great flavors, we recommend their Mesquite BBQ (even if it is mild) and Cracked Pepper and Sea Salt. If you like it hot and spicy, however, these may be right up your alley.
