We stared at the fresh cut grass colored back of Deep River Zesty Jalapeño Chips for a few minutes before cracking it open and taking the plunge. With several types of pepper including Green Bell Pepper and Jalapeño, alone with additional “natural jalapeño flavor” we know for sure they wouldn’t be mild.
As someone who is not crazy about spicy food, I personally avoid hot chips if I can, but these Deep River chips called out to us and we had to give them a try (that and we try whatever we can so you, loyal reader, can avoid the bad and enjoy the good).
When we cracked open the bag of Deep River Snacks Zesty Jalapeño chips we were surprised that unlike the Wise New York Jalapeno chips, there was no spicy smell at all, just a starchy potato odor. As we took our first bite we were welcomed with a sour cream and onion combo and then the spice hit.
Having eaten just two of these the inside of my mouth and outside of my lips was burning, but my taste buds were begging for more. They should really rename these Zesty Sour Cream and Onion because more than anything else, they felt like a spicy version of a very classic potato chip flavor.
In terms of appearance they also look like Sour Cream and Onion chips, and you can see the green flakes, though they are kettle cooked for extra crunch. Deep River Snacks Zesty Jalapeño also had all of the things we like about standard Deep River Snacks, they aren’t particularly greasy but you do get some residue on the fingers.
My fortunate coworkers who I brought some to powered through the bag which is always a good sign. Overall I rate them definitely recommended because, although hot isn’t my style, the flavor was great (though you didn’t taste the pepper, you FELT IT).
If you like hot chips, bump Zesty Jalapeno Deep River chips up to a Must Munch and of course avoid them if you don’t. Be sure to keep some milk nearby too because the spice lingers for a looooooooooooong time.
