Similar to local brewed beers, it seems more and more small, hometown chip brands are popping up by the day. Deep River Snacks, based in Old Lyme Connecticut, make many varieties and we gave their standard Original Salted version a taste.
Kettle cooked chips are a step above your standard supermarket fare and the fancy thick packaging and slightly higher price is reinforcement of the fact that these are special chips. The Deep River Snacks motto is “Great Chips…Serious Flavor” so we were excited to give them a try. The chips were very light and really felt like homemade chips.
As far as kettle cooked chips go they weren’t very greasy and the bag definitely felt more full than your standard personal one. The one downside to these chips was that Original Salted really meant very lightly salted, which isn’t exactly a serious flavor at all. Currently the ultimate kettle cooked chip is Cape Cod, even the most basic are irresistible. Deep River, and anyone for that matter, has a ways to go to match or top them.
Unfortunately, we didn’t get a chance to try any of the other flavors that Deep River Snacks offers, but I know that I am excited to try flavors like Asian Sweet and Spicy and Sweet Maui Onion soon. As far as plain chips go, these ones were pretty plain but are worth a shot if a higher standard, full bag of chips is what you crave. Stay tuned for our reviews of their other flavors which we have at Munchies HQ.
