Like most other mesquite bbq chips, Deep River Snacks Mesquite BBQ chips came in a red bag. However, unlike other chips, there was no other “BBQ” imagery like charcoal, flame or some sort of spice. Fortunately, Deep River let the taste of this snack speak for itself and boy did it sing.
As the front gave us no indication on what Deep River considers “Mesquite” flavor to be, we scanned the back which revealed a “natural smoke flavor” spices, garlic and onion powder and paprika. When we saw smoke flavor we were instantly reminded of our previously reviewed Dirty Chips Smokey Chipotle and grew a bit scared. Deep River Mesquite BBQ chips also feature both standard sugar and brown sugar so we assumed they would be sweet. They did not have a very strong smell but they were very red as expected.
Like all Deep River Snacks we’ve tried, they were kettle cooked chips and you could see some potato skin on the outsides of several of the chips. From our very first bite we could tell these would be a must munch. They are definitely more sweet than mesquite but they tasted so good we couldn’t put the bag down.
Although at times it felt like there was a lacking of actual bbq taste for the most part, each bite was almost better than the previous. You could taste the garlic and it would go back and fourth with the sweet hint of bbq and sugar. The chips were not greasy at all but they did leave residue on your fingers. They were nicely crunchy without causing any jaw pains and so covered in flavoring you almost don’t even taste potato until the very end. What more can we say, if you see a bag, grab it, enjoy it, share it if you are feeling particularly nice.
