Asian Sweet & Spicy Deep River Snacks come in a very un-manly pinkish bag that doesn’t feature anything particularly sweet or spicy on it. Once you crack open the bag, however, you can instantly smell a spicy/sweet combination that is reminiscent of sweet chili sauce. What you don’t smell, see or expect, however, is a ginger flavor that makes you question your own taste buds!
The Deep River Snacks Asian Sweet and Spicy potato chips offer the same kettle cooked crunch we enjoyed in their original, and unlike their Olive Oil and Rosemary flavored cousin, they have a very strong taste that goes through a few phases. When we first smelled the chips we could tell they would be pretty spot on in terms of their description. You could see green specks on each chip which indicated some sort of flavoring (the closest green thing we could find on the ingredients was parsley).
One thing we did not see ANYWHERE on the bag, however, was ginger. At first I could not figure out what this unique but familiar flavor was that kept calling me back to try more and see. Each chip is actually pretty spicy for my taste and although I’m not a huge fan of very spicy things, I kept going back to determine what this mystery flavor was. I would look at the back of the bag over and over again but nothing listed there was what I tasted.
About half way through the bag of Asian Sweet and Spicy Dirty Chips, it hit me and it was undeniable, Ginger; One of the mystery “natural flavors” on the back of the bag was what this strong flavor was. I actually am not the first to realize this and after searching I noticed several other reviewers noticed the same thing! The ginger is that strong that you can taste it above others, yet it remains missing from the ingredients.
Determining how to grade these chips was an extremely difficult task. They are truly a unique flavor but they aren’t bad at all. I put them in the worth a munch category because if you want to test your taste buds and your tolerance for spiciness, then these are worth a shot. They may even be tasty as an appetizer before your favorite take-out chinese dish!
