I’m always struck by Asian snack flavors because they seemingly try to introduce a little taste of healthy into a guilty pleasure. Cadina’s Crunchy Pea Snack in basil flavor is no exception. The bright green bag is similar to the color of a fresh snap pea, but I had to wonder what the tangerine coloring was on the picture of the pea twists. I love basil and peas so I was willing to forge ahead even though the snack looked more like tempura than a veggie.

Cadina Pea Snack basil twists smell like dried basil with a generous shake of salt. The bag is quite full with a plentiful portion of small twists. They resemble a corn twist (think more twisted Dipsy Doodles, or BBQ Fritos) with light green edges. Thankfully the orange coloring that I feared was nowhere to be found once I saw the real deal. I was also surprised that the salty smell translated into much milder salty taste.

I found the overall taste to be pleasant and if you enjoy healthy snacks it will fulfill your desire for crunch and sodium, but beware of the veggie infusion. Likewise, if you are a traditional snacker, and not adventurous, I wouldn’t recommend this flavor for you. The basil leaves an aftertaste that is not abhorrent, but would certainly be displeasing to those who have a hard time eating traditional greens from the market. The other options offered by Cadina like cheese, hot cheddar or garlic might be more up your alley.

The number one ingredient in Cadina Crunchy Pea Snacks  Basil Flavor is peas, they contain 0g grams trans fat and have 16% of the daily-recommended dietary fiber, so one could argue that they are a healthier option. Overall, I’d buy them again, but they won’t be a staple go-to snack (ala any of our must munch snacks) and don’t let your kids convince you that they are a substitute for real peas!
