With an air of superiority and palates chiseled by the world’s most distinct cuisines, we breezily approached the airy rings and smirked after our first sample punished no one.
The chip’s sour pungency, however effectively masked a slow burn that would come to define its flavor – we should have trusted the tattooed and mulleted man working the graveyard shift. Even the most circumspect sniff of the bag would reveal its contents: the vinegar slaps the nostrils with a Pacino subtlety.
As if 7-11 were so desperate to differentiate its products and to show precisely how the Louisiana Hot Sauce flavored Onion-flavored Rings vary from its normal onion-flavored rings, aside from the red label and the green, the bag’s contents lurch out at your taste buds and won’t relinquish control the total opposite of other weaker snacks we had. “Like a whore in too much make-up,” chastised a friend upon her sampling, and indeed a bit of refinement might have been warranted.
The sour taste of the onion flavored rings would usually be ascribed to a full-blown Salt & Vinegar chip, whereas the actual onion element seems to have been entirely neglected. Or at least overwhelmingly subdued by the vinegar and chili additives. For those interested in a direct competition of Man vs Spice, and view the world as a challenge to be bested, then these onion flavored rings may be for you.
Foregoing the balance of onion that only the French seem to master, prepare yourself for the contents of a Tabasco (err Louisiana) bottle in the form of a crisp, dry, hellacious halo. Though an unsatisfying crunch into the hollow ring’s bodies might be quickly forgotten, 7-11’s tenacious spice will linger on.
