I was eager to try Wise’s Honey BBQ Potato Chips after being disappointed by longtime favorite Wise’s Onion and Garlic Potato Chips; this was mostly because I was hoping to prove to myself that the company does offer delicious chips at a great price. Thankfully, their Honey BBQ flavor was a return to the form I remember and featured a nice chip with a sweet finish.
Another disappointing feature of the Onion and Garlic potato chips was the empty bag syndrome they suffered. At 50 cents for a small bag, Wise Honey BBQ potato chips had a much better amount within and each chip was nicely seasoned. The bag itself had a salty potato smell and did not give much of a hint in terms of what the chips themselves would taste like.
The bag features a nice honeycomb design and aside from the large BBQ written across it, there is no other indication that these chips are barbecue flavored. Naturally, however, the taste of BBQ is much stronger than the Honey, which provides a nice, sweet finish to the end of each chip. The barbecue taste is mesquite and mild but does have a little bit of tang at the end before the sweet honey finishes up each bite.
Similar to Dirty Chips Mesquite BBQ the overall bbq taste of Wise’s Honey BBQ was a bit to mild for me personally, but it isn’t bad. One aspect that I particularly enjoyed with these chips is that they are thicker than your standard “cheap chip” and the lack of crumbs makes for a less messy snacking experience (though you may still need a napkin or shirt to wipe off some seasoning).
Although it doesn’t seem that there are any glaring negatives Wise Honey BBQ Potato Chips, something keeps me from giving them our ultimate grade. I think it is the mild taste which falls short of Lay’s BBQ Chips. Overall I would recommend them if you want an easy snack or something to go along with your meal that doesn’t overpower it. For now Lay’s BBQ remains king.
