Making munchies at home is a great way to save money and enjoy your favorite snacks whenever you want, and we must admit that when you cook your own food, it always tastes better. We are therefore excited to introduce easy snack recipes to Munchies Blog. Our resident Chef Nicole is going to kick off our new section with a baked pita chips recipe and I can tell you first hand they are a MUST MUNCH.
Healthy, hearty and delicious – oh and easy too! In only 20 minutes, you can make your own pita chips.
I’m always looking for new healthy snack alternatives, and when my friend and I made these for the first time a few summers ago, I knew we hit the jackpot. Loaded with fiber and flavor, these easy-to-make homemade pita chips are healthy and delicious.
What you’ll need
- 1 pack of pita bread – pick your favorite. I use Joseph’s Flax, Oat Bran & Whole Wheat Flour Pita Bread – only 60 cals, 2g fat and 4g fiber per pita
- EVOO (Extra Virgin Olive Oil) – 3 tablespoons or enough to lightly toss and coat the pieces
- Salt
- Garlic powder
- Optional: Feel free to add seasoning and spices to your liking. For example, sprinkle pre-baked chips with Parmesan cheese, or chili powder.
Procedure
- Rip each pita apart into bite-size pieces, make sure you don’t leave the ends folded or they won’t cook evenly.
- Toss the pieces in the olive oil and then sprinkle with salt and garlic powder; use enough of each to lightly coat pieces.
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees; cover pan with pita bread pieces, and be sure not to layer the pieces on top of each other, or they won’t cook evenly.
- Bake for 6 -8 minutes or until crisp and lightly browned – keep an eye on them because depending on the type of pita, baking time will vary.
- Cool and serve! Pair with hummus or eat alone – they’re yummy however you choose to eat them.
One important note: Taste the chips when they are removed from the oven, if you want more flavor now’s the time to add additional salt or garlic.
That’s all you need to make delicious baked pita chips at home. Simple, tasty and cheap, what better snack is there?
