Imagine a mini cheeto-like snack that instead of being bright orange was bright red, tasted like a sweet ketchup and were spice and oddly addictive and you have yourself Kurkure Naughty Tomatoes. A snack from India that is worth trying if you can find it.
With a bag featuring a tomato that has lips and the snack itself as its horns, we were curious as to how “naughty” these snacks would be. They definitely delivered and these tomato flavored rice meal Cheeto cousins really surprised us.
They have a nice doodle-like crunch, which according to our first poll, people like over a puff. The snack fluctuates from sweet to sour, to sweet spicy hot in the back of your mouth. Most people seemed turned off by the idea of a tomato flavored snack but everyone we shared them with was oddly addicted to them. The sweetness has a cinnamon-y tang to it that is not overpowering but definitely not light.
The back of the bag actually includes a few recipes like a salad with Kurkure Naughty Tomato doodles as the croutons. I don’t know that we would be willing to go that far, but they would go nicely as a side to something more mild flavored. Definitely don’t have them with a sandwich that has a lot of mustard for instance, however, because the flavors will definitely clash too much.
India is definitely known for unique tastes and some pretty spicy foods. These snacks are definitely made to cater to an audience used to such things, but as stated above, although everyone we sampled them with was initial shocked, everyone liked them. If you know someone going to India (like we did) or have an international market nearby, see if you can find yourself a bag, we think you will be quite surprised.
